Seattle to Black Butte via I 82 and 97

We are thinking of taking this route in mid-September - have done the I-5 too many times.

Any recommendations for good lunch stops?

We may even stay one night in The Dalles. Any suggestions about that or a better alternative? Of course, dinner goes with a place to stay the night, so houndish suggestions around a place to stay would be much appreciated.

You might try a search of the PNW board for Hood River and The Dalles. I recall a few discussions of those areas with good recommendations.
