Recommendations on the Oregon Coast
My husband and I are taking a 10 day trip to Seattle, the Oregon Coast and Portland. We are staying in Cannon Beach and Gleneden Beach while we are on the coast. Any recommendations while we are on the coast? My husband isn't the biggest fan of fish but besides that, we are not picky. Thanks in advance!
Based on one visit so far, I would have to recommend Coleman's 9N (or is it called Coleman's Shady Rest?) on the south side of Highway 6 somewhere between Tillamook and where 6 joins 26, if you are driving back from the coast to Portland. They just opened a month ago. Interesting menu. All I had was their chile verde, which was muy sabroso, and quite spicy; and a coffee almond fudge milkshake, which was ambrosia. Not real cuisine, but some interesting dishes, and lots of comfort food, plus quirky decor. Really quite a surprise to find it where it is.

I am now back at the place where I have more info. It is called Coleman's 9N, 503.357.3093. The address is 55660 (N.W.?) Wilson River Highway (aka State Highway 6), Gales Creek, OR, Milepost 42.5. It's maybe fifteen miles west of North Plains. They're closed M-Tu, but open 7 am - 9 pm Wednesday through Sunday. Their menu looks nondescript -- American diner comfort food -- but if that chile and shake were any indication, they really know what they are doing. I THINK they have specials that push the envelope a little more. I also remembered that one of the bits of decor is an actual, antique, primo condition tractor, sitting on the floor of the restaurant, without comment. And one of the clocks (which does not run) is set permanently at 4:20, wink wink. Anyway, it's definitely worth a try, if you are on that road and hungry. There's an nice little spot in Cannon Beach called Bistro, check it out for sure, and there is the Nehalem Inn, in Nehalem, just south of Manzanita.
Too bad so sad about hubby not liking seafood.

This is not exactly on the coast (far from, in fact), but if your return trip is via I-5, stop in Castle Rock, WA (Mt. St. Helen's area) and hit Hattie's. Without question, it's the best fried chicken I have ever had. IIRC, it was half a chicken cut into four pieces. The batter was light and crisp without any trace of greasiness or oiliness, and the meat was tender and flavorful.

I recommend JP's at Cannon Beach. As of a few years ago, it's now located in the main area of the town, directly across (the parking lot) from the candy kitchen with the white and pink stripes. As with most place at the coast, they do focus mostly on seafood, but they also have other choices that we've enjoyed. For those in your party who do enjoy seafood, the seafood chowder (in addition to the clam chowder) is a must-have! Enjoy.

In Gleneden: Side Door Cafe
Points in Between: Nehalem River Inn (in Nehalem on road to Mohler - best meal on this part of the coast, but not inexpensive...worth the drive from Cannon Beach), Treasure Cafe (in Wheeler), Whiskey Creek Cafe (in Netarts on the 3 Capes Loop), Blackfish Cafe (in Lincoln City), Wildflower Grill (in Lincoln City)
Avoid: Oceanus (in Depoe Bay)

Tried the new Newman's 988 in Cannon Beach this summer, and it was amazing, especially the lobster ravioli!

We tried Coleman's 9N, only for the shakes. They were $5!
However they were great. I had the marionberry pie shake. Definately recommend.

Not sure if I'm too late with this reply, but I highly recommend the Treasure Cafe in Wheeler Oregon. The food is absolutely a culinary delight. The menu has a variety of seafood dishes that are exquisite. In addition they have steaks, grilled lamb, sometimes you'll see slow smoked bbq ribs as a special, etc. All depends on what the chef feels like cooking that day. I'm sure you're husband would be able to find something to satisfy himself with. You can also call (503-368-7740) and find out too what may be on the menu and go from there. It could get quite busy there so I would call for reservations.

The Treasure Cafe was great for years, then it closed, then it opened, and it was good, then it closed again and opened to new ownership, and was spotty, and then closed again for at least a year (ca. 2005).
Is it now open and actually good once again?

I have been trying to eat dinner here for two years. I had a great breakfast there about 2 years ago, then they stopped doing breakfast and only do dinner Thurs.-Sun. and only IN SEASON. Definitely call and try to get reservations, if they are open.
I will try again in June, as I really want to have dinner there (breakfast was great - fried oyster bennie with perfect fried oysters just out of the water that morning and the best hollandaise ever), but they don't make it easy. On the other hand, more power to the owner/chef who can set his own hours! ;o)
The only really good place we have found to eat on this part of the coast, for miles around year-round, is the Nehalem River Inn.

The Chef/owners at the Treasure Cafe open up in the Springtime and close roughly around mid Nov. -right before Thanksgiving. From what I was told, they head south to warmer climates for a little R&R. Wish I could take off for 3 1/2 months for R&R. When they do end up coming back, the chef comes back with new & exciting dishes. Worth the wait, that is if you can wait that long. Happy eating.

Since we seem to be updating this old thread, I highly recommend Wanda's in Nehalem for breakfast. And any of their sweet bakery goods are great to take along for snacking.

Oops, I didn't notice how old your post was when I recommended Salishan.
Anyway, earmark it for next time.
