SF--Tahoe trip report, part two

(continued from the SF board).......
Much of what we ate on the Tahoe segment of our trip was brought up from the Bay Area, and was covered in the Bay Area segment of our trip report: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/show/...

However, we did have a few nice restaurant meals in Tahoe, and on the way back to Vegas. We had two breakfasts at the Old Post Office Café in Carnelian Bay. For the first, I had eggs benedict and a side order of crispy bacon. Well executed, although the lemon pepper hollandaise didn’t seem as good as usual. The thick crispy bacon was very good as always. S. O. had the veggie home fries, which were nice and crispy, had bits of browned onion and green pepper, and were topped with avocado. Excellent. So good, in fact, that we picked up a large to-go order on our way out of Tahoe a few days later—road breakfast for both of us. We also had a nice dinner one night at Black Bear Tavern in Tahoe City --starting out with a goat-cheese/onion/balsamic tart that although small, was quite tasty. We each had the meatloaf as a main (marinara sauced with garlic mashed), and thought it was pretty good and a good value--some of the other things on the menu seemed overpriced. Service was fine, probably because it was almost empty.

For lunch on the way home, we finally tried the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining. If you somehow have missed the numerous posts on this place, let me say this: If you are passing through (or even near) Lee Vining, DO NOT MISS this place! It was very hard to decide between the many specials—they all sounded so good. S.O. had the Buffalo Meatloaf (hey, we really like meatloaf!), and I had the grilled albacore, with some sort of soy-ish sauce. We shared an incredibly moist and rich slice of chocolate cake with raspberry sauce. Everything was outstanding, and way better than anyone has a right to expect from a deli/restaurant attached to a gas station out in the sticks. We would go far out of our way for a meal here.

Whoa Nellie was a great end to our trip, food-wise. It was a good thing we ate well there, because there’s not much available on the rest of the drive, other than a nasty McDonalds in Tonopah, and a couple of questionable-looking places in the speed trap known as Beatty.

  1. I love Whoa Nellie Deli! I had the buffalo meatloaf last time and liked it. I'll have to go back for the grilled albacore and chocolate cake.

    Thanks for the report.
