I'm being challenged to cook an authentic German meal, and wondered if there are any German grocery/specialty food stores in the area? Which is the best/has the best selection etc.? I live in Marin.

Thanks!

The Junket in El Cerrito has an excellent selection of German food. Cheese, meats, dry goods, desserts, beer, wine.

ah... Morton beat me to it. I read about The Junket's German products during the World Cup. It's been at the El Cerrito Plaza for as long as I can remember.

I live within walking distance of The Junket which has a fair amount of sausage made by Saag and some Schaller and Weber. But if I wanted to make a real German meal which required a number of real German products and a real German butcher I'd go to

in Mountain View, for smoked pork chops (Kassler Ripchen), Nuremburger Bratwurst, Thuringer Bratwurst, Teawurst, and Jagdwurst. It's all made there and the place just smells like Germany.

I second Dittmers. In addition to the very extensive meat selection they also have lots of German imports.

If you can make it down the peninsula, there's Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City. The website lists some, but not all of their products. You can also get some food items to eat there.

Closer to you is Lehr's German Specialties, 1581 Church St., SF. (415) 282-6803.
