Fresh Bratwurst/Knockwurst in Hartford area?

Anyone know a good butcher/retailer/grocery store selling good quality FRESH brats? Have a great recipe and I don't want to use the typical prefab stop & shop crap.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Newington Meat on Main St. in Newington has excellent store made kielbasa and kelly dogs. I'm not sure if they also make their own brats.

      1. Try Adolf's Meats and Sausage kitchen in Hartford. The address is 35 New Britain Ave. Call 860-522-1588 for store hours. This place has been in business for ages, and makes its sausages in-house, including some hard-to-find varieties. They have a large clientele of German-Americans. I can't imagine that you'd find anything better in the Hartford area.

A kelly dog is an individual hot-dog sized kielbasa that fits nicely on a hot dog bun.

this place was excellent. what a great rec and a place that i would have never discovered otherwise (super shady neighborhood, don't drive the good car there). the fresh brats made for a good dinner. will be returning for smoked weisswurst and garlic kielbasa. and the cute polish girl working behind the counter!

Glad to accommodate. There are so many hidden gems out there that would remain undiscovered if not for this site.

          2. Growing up in a family of meat purveyors, I have acquired a skillful eye for quality meats and provisions. My ancestry is Polish and German so when I entered Adolf’s for the first time and smelled the aromas I had flash backs of my grandfather bringing me as a child to butcher shops New York. I have to proclaim that the quality at Adolf’s is by far the best I have ever experienced. I recommend anyone who wants quality variety and authentic European smoked meats, plus authentic groceries from Europe to visit this store. I must warn you! Your will be spoiled and have difficulty purchasing meat products from anywhere else. They just won’t compare!

            1. Old thread but I used the Chowhound search feature and came to this post. Is Adolf's still the best bet for fresh brats in the Hartford area?
