California Hounds seek upscale Indian

We'll be visiting NYC for Labor Day weekend and want to have Indian food one night. We're looking for upscale, contemporary Indian cuisine with an attractive setting. We've eaten at Tabla before and enjoyed it, but we'd like to try soething new. I've read some about Mint--is that a good choice?

Devi and Tamarind are great. Those are all yuo really have to know in terms of upscale Indian in NYC. 6th Street is by no means upscale.

Yet another Devi thumbs up. I haven't tried Chola yet, but I'm going to do the buffet later this week.

There's no reason to go to 6th Street.

4th for Devi. A real step-up in terms of quality and a very attractive room.

I really like Chola on 58th st. It has elegant service and very good food. Try the Lamb Shatty(?).

Agree that Devi is excellent. Also Tamarind for modern Indian.

If you're visiting 6th street, I'd recommend Banjara.

I don't know about Mint but I'll second Devi - it's upscale and inventive. Upstairs has a charming, romantic decor. A lot of younger Indian professionals hang out here, so I think that's a good sign. I also suggest the Bread Bar at Tabla (the downstairs space). More casual, but still very good quality, and a nice place for lunch.
