Lunch between NYC and Saratoga Springs??

We're driving to Saratoga next weekend from NYC and would love suggestions for a great place to stop for lunch along the way. Not looking for fancy necessarily - just local, hole in the wall and swell. Crab shack, regional specialty/favorite kind of place. Thanks for your input.

There's a small local fast food chain in the Albany area called Ted's Fish Fry. There's one in Troy and a couple of others. I do not recommend fast food places, but Ted's is different. Great fried fish, a two-inch thick nearly foot long piece of haddock fried to perfection; almost greaseless onion rings, a small order enough for three large people.

I posted about it a long time ago. You can read the whole post here:

There is always the CIA in Hyde Park. Students spending untold thousands to work in the several restaurants and cafe.

I know everybody says this--but if you ever go there, definitely try the pan-blackened stringbeans.

            Oops! Sorry!

I suspect that is probably just a summer thing. Not that it does you any good now, but if you are back that way again, I would suggest checking the website.

Thanks for all the great ideas. New World looks terrific but unfortunately it appears that they no longer serve lunch - only dinner.

Oh, good one! I didn't even think of New World. I love that place--I'd go there more often if it weren't out in the middle of f...ing nowhere ;)

I love New World Home Cooking in Saugerties, which is right off 87. Great, fun, tasty new American cuisine, at a reasonable price. Chef Ric Orlando is a low-key regional celebrity. http://www.newworldhomecooking.com

Are you taking the Thruway? Consider stopping off at exit 18, New Paltz. Many good places to eat... Search the posts on this board for specific recommendations.
