Tasty And Pleasant Lunches Near Nob Hill

Any recs for where to chow within walking distance of this area?
Recs for breakfast would be appreciated too. On vacation next week, but not familiar with the city, so anything you can do to keep me from starving and point me toward the really good stuff would be great. Any type of cuisine, I'm an adventurous eater. Thanks!

  1. Nob Hill is more of a residential neighborhood, so there aren't too many restaurants on the hill itself (especially for lunch).

BUT, it's very close to Chinatown (head downhill on California Street), as well as Union Square (downhill to the South along Powell Street) and North Beach (downhill to the North along Powell).

For breakfast, on Jones near Ellis (on the Union Square side of the hill) is Dottie's True Blue Cafe (funky, full traditional breakfasts). On Stockton and Filbert (on the North Beach side) is Mama's (omelets).

On the hill itself, Venticello for dinner is good (a bit uneven, but very pretty Italian restaurant). Allegro Romano (a quick cab ride away on Russian Hill) is very good.

Canteen on Sutter near Leavenworth (Union Square side, again) is great Wed.-Sun. for any meal. It's run by a top-level chef who left a big restaurant to re-connect (in the case, literally face-to-face) with diners.

More details on type of food, ambience or price would produce more suggestions!

PS - Don't ever worry about starving in SF -- the biggest problem is choosing where to eat!
