Pho Hoa Hiep II and i-Cafe on Irving St/Sunset, also bubble tea question

Dave MP Aug 18, 2006 11:34 PM

I went with two friends last night to Pho Hoa Hiep II...one friend had been there before. One friend and I split two beef pho, one with meatballs, one with thin sliced steak (served raw on the side). Overall a pretty good bowl of pho, though not the best I've ever had. Broth seemed a bit oily (my friend who had been there before made this comment too) and wasn't as flavorful as other broth I'd had before in Boston. Still, a very nice meal. The other friend had vegetarian spring rolls which looked good, although I think they charged the same price even though she ordered them without shrimp or pork.

After dinner we headed to get bubble tea, ended up choosing i-Cafe. I had taro milk tea, friend had a passion fruit slush. The milk tea itself was okay (the purple variety, as opposed to taro flavoring mixed with real tea) and the boba were also okay, but not spectacular. They were a bit hard on the inside and a bit too mushy on the outside. The passion fruit slush was pretty good. Is this the best there is in that neighborhood?

I would love to know who's got the best bubble tea in that area....I usually order jasmine green tea, sometimes with a flavoring like taro or passion fruit, sometimes with milk and sometimes without. I'll probably be back in that neighborhood in the next few days so it would be great to know where I should head....other outstanding bubble tea recs in the city would also be appreciated (in this thread or a new one)

Pho Hoa Hiep II is on Irving St. between 19th and 20th Av, i-Cafe is also on Irving between 20th and 21st.

That would be Wonderful Foods between 22nd and 23rd, and yes, we cross town for the boba drinks there. Try the beef or pork jerky too.

um, yeah, wonderful foods it is. and you were so close too. quite unfortunate.

this is the place i remember bringing the whole boba thing to sf when it started many many moons ago. lines around the block. on a hot day, you still get lines out the door.

plus you get all the candy, jerky, and sweets you could ask for in the same spot. although i bought a red bean cake thing they have and it wasn't great. not enough red bean and cake bit was a little too cakey, if that makes sense.

Argh, you're right, I was so close. Next time (which will probably be pretty soon) we'll head there. I will definitely report back.

Dave MP -- if you get a chance, you should check out Creations on Geary. You'll find alot of Chinese desserts that you won't see at many places.

If you go to Creations, you MUST get the sago which is so much better than any boba anywhere. And get the mango mochi.

Totally - the Mango Mochi are divine!

But the one they do with the mango puree, diced mango, mochi balls and mango sorbet/gelato is out of this world.

CAUTION: Just remember that they don't open until 2:00 pm -and be very careful with the parking meters in that area - they tag very agressively and a parking ticket I believe is about $50...

I like Double Rainbow bubble/boba tea, especially their tapioca balls. Don't get the shave ice as the ice shaver is more like ice crusher--not very good at all.

The Double Rainbow shop is now a Quickly boba place. This doesn't look good for Wonderful Foods next door. I was there last night and they were empty while Quickly was jammed pack.
Hopefully, Wonderful Foods will survive with their other food offerings.

Yep, I noticed that today as well. Quickly is a big chain in Asia and it is now expanding stores in the US as well. They offer a wide variety of Taiwan snacks and drinks.
