Recent Dinner at Driskill Grill - Austin

My wife and I recently had dinner at Driskill Grill and it was superb. We opted for the regular three course dinner as opposed to the six or nine course chef's tasting menu. All of our courses were very good to excellent.

First Course -- Beef Tartare was the best I've ever had. Served with a couple of lightly fried oysters. Texas Chop Salad was excellent -- avocados, Maytag bleu cheese and bacon.

Second Course -- Baby Octopus Chimichuri was very good, not great. Pistachio Crusted Sea Scallop was excellent, served with Chanterelle mushrooms and truffled herb salad.

Third Course -- Coral Sea Prawns with grilled chorizo and charred tomatoes was excellent. Jameson Farms Rack of Lamb was excellent and cooked perfectly medium rare, but the killer was the spectacular mushroom risotto on which the lamb was served.

Skipped dessert because the first three courses had us sated.

Service was prompt, attentive without being irritating and the pacing of the courses was perfect. This was a great choice for our "one dinner in Austin."

One sidelight: This is a fancy-looking restaurant. Definitely fine dining. We had driven into Austin that Saturday afternoon for a party that evening. At about 6 p.m. I realized I had brought no shoes and only had the flip-flops that were on my feet. I called the concierge at the hotel (Hilton)and desperately asked where I could get some shoes. He told me it should be no problem getting into the restaurant with what I had on, this being Austin, so I called the restaurant and asked the maitre d' if he would let me in with flip-flops on my feet and his response was "I'll let you in. You do, of course, have a recent pedicure, don't you?" Problem solved. I love Austin!

  1. I must agree, they make a damn fine steak tartare.

    Any interesting amuses? They once did a frozen shard of tequila jabbed into a custard.
