Where can I buy gourmet chocolate in Orange County?

socalqtpi Aug 17, 2006 03:55 PM

I'm looking for a place that sells chocolate bars from Michel Cluizel, Amedei, Bonnat, Dolfin, etc. in the Orange County area. Any suggestions?

I posted this question on another website & received responses for Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, See's & Godiva which aren't really "gourmet" in my book.

Thanks for your help!

Trader Joes carries Valhrona and you might find some of the others at Sur la Table or maybe even Gelsons or Bristol Farms

The best chocolatier in OC I can think of is Chuao in Irvine, but I don't think they sell other companies' chocolate.

Just a note on Chuao -- I've found that their chocolates are sometimes not as fresh as they should be. In fact, the "freebies" I'm given are always cloudy and old looking. At times, the nuts on the almond truffle have been soft. I wrote to the owners and the only response I got was: yeah, the chocolates don't move that quickly at the Irvine location. It's too bad, really.

They do sell El Rey bars.

Does Whole Foods sell other types of high-end bars? I would think that would be a good place to check.

I've also seen some chocolate bars at Sur La Table; I can't remember the brands, though.

I too like Chuao--their chocolate better than their "fillings". Great chocolate.

Irvine Spectrum Center has Chuao Chocolatier ( www.chuaochocolatier.com ) - elmonster wrote a review on it at the end of '05: http://elmomonster.blogspot.com/2005/12/chuao-chocolatier-irvine.html

There's also Bodega Chocolates, though not sure where the stores are (they are based in the OC, but the only B&M store I know is in the Grove in West LA) -- their webbie yielded no answers either :\ www.bodegachocolates.com

Eeek read your post way too fast --- Neiman-Marcus stores tend to have some high-end chocolates available (thought not sure if they carry your specific brands).

Needless Markups in San Fran has the Cluizel bars but I dont know about down here. I could be mistaken but the last time I was in the home goods area of the NB Needless Markups, they only sold Godiva and other chocolates like that.

Also, pascal epicerie had cluizel bars at one point, but i don't know if they have them now.

Sadly the NM in Fashion Island is missing a Candy shop... and don't even get me STARTED on the poor excuse of a shoe department they have there...

Wine Exchange in Orange carries Sharffenberger and Cluizel. (winex.com)

You can get Michel Cluizel bars (and his boxed chocolates) at:

                  http://www.worldwidechocolate.com/shop_cluizel.html

My very favorite bar of his is this one (it's incredible):
