Savvy New Canaan - NY Times Excellent? Nope
I've now eaten at this new restaurant five times and the NY Times reviewed it last weekend. Although the Times gave it an "excellent" if you read the test it had numerous negative cmments and you sort of wondered how it got to it's rating, but it's their call. BTW, the text was very accurate, food undercooked, and other missteps.
The setting is wonderful with ample parking. The inside is small and intimate on one side and more kid friendly atmosphere on the other. We are moving to the empty nester, so intimate, quiet and relaxing is what we look for. Outside the seating is relaxing and on a beautiful night it is tough to beat.
Now my input on my food and i am wondering if others have experienced this or have been pleased. My five dishes have consisted of two risottos, one scallop, one duck and one cod. The risottos were both severely undercooked, the scallops were cold with two sea scallops cut paper thin, the duck was way undercooked and the cod was flavorless.
I was wondering if others have experienced this disappointment at what the Times calls "Excellent." I would only rate this a "Fair."
Well, I must give you an "A" for persistence. One disappointing meal is enough to keep me from returning to a restaurant once, much less four times. I haven't tried Savvy, but Thursday's Stamford Advocate also had a review: very noisy, poor service, fabulous crabcakes and desserts, fair to middling entrees. The reviewer seemed to have confidence that the weak areas would improve with time given the quality of the owners' other restaurants. Personally, I have better ways to spend my dining budget than on eating at places that are still muddling through, though the descriptions of the desserts suggest it might be a great after-movie dessert and coffee stop.
