I frequent Donovan's on Savin Hill on a regular basis, meaning an average of 3-4 times a week over the past few years. Richie has been the chef there for as long as I've been going and I haven't heard of any changes in staff. As for the new interior, they've freshned up a bit with a new coat of paint and decorations. They are not good about updating the menus on their website, and most often the postings are a few weeks old. The specials change on Friday. One of the specials this week is a grilled seafood entree with 1/2 lobster tail; shrimp; scallops and zuchini sticks. It comes with a choice of vegetable and soup ($19.00). They also have an appetizer of lobster macaroni and cheese which is more than enough for a meal. Donovans is one of my favorite restaurants, it's comfortable, the food is good and there are many choices on the menu with a broad price range. As for the new restaurant, the last I heard they were shooting for October, but you know how those things can go.

I'm hoping to get there in the next couple of weeks, but no, I haven't been there in a few months, so I don't know what the changes are like. I tried to get on their Web site. but they seem to be having server problems (and I checked the cached pages on Google and it looks like they still have the old menu up).
I believe they are also going to be opening a second branch in Hyde Park. Not sure when it will be open, if it isn't already...

The Hyde Park branch has a way to go before it is opened. It looks like they have gutted the entire place (formerly Mario's Italian restaurant, on Hyde Park Ave in Cleary Square). The front is all boarded up. I have not seen a lot of activity, but maybe they are working on the interior first. We are excited to have a new pub in Hyde Park. In the meantime, have you been to Master McGraths on River Street? Suprisingly tasty pub grub, and a big menu, friendly staff. Nothing to go out of your way for, but if you're by there and looking for a beer and a snack you'll probably like it.

re: JudyHP
Boy, all sorts of places popping up in Hyde Park. If I were coming from JP on Hyde Park Ave., would I take a right on River St for McGraths? I was always surprised Hyde Park didn't have more bars with good pub food, they just don't have many places at all. But now there's bbq to try, this and Donovan's when it opens. And still need to hit the West African place.

On Hyde Park Ave, coming from JP, take a Left on River Street - you approach Logan Square. That is where the BBQ/Soul food place is (used to be Melinda's Taqueria). There is also a latino restaurant (Ricardo's?) that I heard has excellent paella, but I haven't tried it. In the same block of stores is a convenient store (not a chain) that sells jamaican patties that are pretty tasty and cheap. I think they are the frozen ones everybody has, but a nice snack to grab on the go. Master McGraths is around the bend (stay on River St.) a half block down to your right. Lots of on street parking plus they have their own lot in the back.
