La Fonda Update

Like many on this board I was somewhat dissapointed with La Fonda when they first opened on Irving and 8th in the Inner Sunset...however...after several re-tastes in the past few weeks I've changed my vote. I still think their burritos are too large, yes too large, I just get sort of overwhelmed by trying to eat something the size of my upper arm and I think its difficult to get a good balance of flavors in each bite with something that size but some of their other items are really tasty. Case in point the Sope with Chicken Tinga. The handmade fried to order masa shell is crispy on the outside but tender and just slightly sweet inside, and amazingly grease free. The shell is filled with pintos (great texture and seasoning) or black or refried beans. The Chicken Tinga was quite spicy, smokey, with a touch of cinnamon as well. Crisp lettuce, avocados sliced to order, and creama top it off. The cheese is not cojita as described, but parmesan which I think takes away from the dish, next time I would request it without cheese. There are also freshly fried tortilla chips (tasty enough on their own to need neither salsa or salt) and a nice salsa bar with blended green and red salsas, pickeled jalapenos and carrots, and cilantro and onion. And at three bucks its solidly the best cheap lunch in the neighborhood. The limon agua fresca with tiny slices of lime floating in it was also excellent. In conclusion if you were turned away by the early posts or some early bland experiences I'd give it another try.
