Restaurant week lunch at 701
Quick preface: never been to 701 before; restaurant week veteran.
My companion and I both ordered exact same meal:
Starter: mozarella tomato and basil salad
Main: Pistachio-crusted snapper
Overall thoughts - excellent. The salad was not slices of M, T, and B as I expected in a usual capreses - rather it was chopped and stacked in a cylinder. Also, small tomatoes and diced, smoked cheese. The flavors really blended well together in every bite. Better than I expected, and very good.
The fish was outstanding, very tender, not overcooked, and over a ragout that at first bite I didn't like but came to rather enjoy. It was topped with a citrus and cilantro flavored avocado guacamole that was not great and totally out of place. However, the fish itself was great and a mis-matched garnish is, in my mind, completely excuseable.
Dessert - the menu seemed to imply that the sorbet came with berries; neither I nor my companion got berries. We almost said something, but didn't, because the sorbet was really, really good. First bite and we forgot about the berries. Served in a martini glass with a sprig of mint and a cookie.
Again - overall thoughts: excellent. Will absolutely go back now that I know how good this place is. One quick note - did not serve the whole menu. Choice of 4-5 apps, mains, and desserts. Nonetheless, great food and good value; I was quite pleased.
