Amazing Dinner at Black's

  • 0

Holy cow, you just won't believe this place. We're not easily impressed -- we think Inn at Little Washington is over-rated -- but Black's really blew me away.

The biscuits are as flaky as real croissant; the whole wheat bread is fragrant and tender; the gazpacho -- words can't describe it. Celery sorbet in the middle of tomato essence. They add a bit of crab and some drops of (I think) basil olive oil. I just about upended the plate over my face to get the last drop.

The single oyster on asian slaw was wonderful. The corn cakes were interesting, although we found the goat cheese tarte a bit boring.

They had wild-caught sockeye salmon tonight and it was some of the best I've ever had.

For desert we chose a creme fraiche frozen souffle which came with a scoop of cherry sorbet. Unbelievable, the epitome of cherriness.

Coffee is good, too, plus they serve it with HOT frothed milk! Nice choice of wines, especially for Montgomery Co.

There were a couple minor service glitches, such as no spoon for the gazpacho, entrees arriving before we'd finished the small plates, and plates not being cleared. Very gracious staff.

They have interesting silverware. Especially liked the spoons. They're long and narrow, rectangular really, and the bowl is deep.

It was quieter outside than inside. That noise problem has plagued this space even back when it was Gulf Coast Kitchen.

It's an interesting mix of people. We went early and sat outside, where there were families with small children. Some folks were dressed quite casually, othes quite dolled up.

Can't wait to eat there again!
