Recommendations for Athens, Santorini and Crete

I have read many of the posts on this board to prepare for a trip to Crete, Santorini and Athens in about two weeks. I read some great reviews of restaurants in Santorini and Athens and am ready to try them out. However, there weren't many reviews for Crete. Can anyone recommend some restaurants? I know Crete is a very large island and we are staying at a resort in Elounda, which is somewhat isolated, but any recommendations would be appreciated.

  1. OH! Elounda! Such a beautiful resort!! I am jealous. Love it! They have several restaurants at the resort. Very few restaurants in Elounda proper. The large town before Elounda (?? Ios Nicholas) has some decent restaurants. We have been to Elounda several times and restaurants in that vicinity close, change etc so your best bet is to ask the concierge at Elounda (although they will of course recommend their own restaurants first). I close my eyes and remember eating breakfast on the patio of our villa in Elounda. Have a wonderful time.

    1. hello - i am headed out to athens, santorini and crete this thursday - exact same itinerary, it seems! i was wondering if you had discovered any great chowhound finds to share? thanks :)

      1. We just got back from 2 weeks in Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete (also Athens for a day) and LOVED it... I hope you like great cheese & olive oil. In Santorini, we loved Katina (fresh sea bass, grilled whole to perfection... we also saw them bring in a fresh catch), Melenio Bakery (great pastries, cakes, sweets, etc)--both in Oia... although Katina is in Amoudi Bay... and also really enjoyed a lovely, very expensive, but amazing meal at Koukoumavles in Fira.

Since Crete is such a large island, I can't tell you the places that we ate at off the top of my head. Maybe if you disclose the actual towns that you're staying in, I can help you a little better. The only thing that I regret not getting a chance to try was the pastries from Bougatsa (2 locations.. both) in Chania town. I fell in love with olive oil, Greek cheeses, and bougatsa (aka galacktoboureko) on this visit to the Greek islands.

hi - we are in santorini right now and going to crete tomnorrow. thanks for the info, so helpful! in crete, we are spending one night in heraklio, then maybe one night in makala, and three or four nights in chania. i DO love cheese and olive oil... its simply amazing to eat it here at the source.

        2. Sorry I can't help with Crete, but I had to jump in. We went to Santorini in Sept. and we had a great dinner at Katina's. Go ... it's worth it.
In Athens, even if it's for frappe and a dessert, I tell everyone I meet to go to Dionysios at the Acropolis just before sunset and linger a while. Although my husband and parents were born there, it was our first trip to Greece after 40 years of marriage. The first night was better than anything I could ever have imagined. Tears streaming down my cheeks as it started to get dark and the lights gradually turned on at the Acropolis. The site is unforgettable. Dinner was very good but, as you would imagine, also very expensive.

          1. I am going to Crete, Santorini and Athens in June. Am wondering how long you all stayed in each place and if you have any itinerary suggestions, along with any other restaurant/market recommendations. Thanks!
