looking for great bakeries in East Village/Sty-Town area. Any great brownies/chocolate chip cookies? Other goodies too. Thanks!

  1. For chocolate chip cookies, Birdbath on 1st Ave, the City Bakery offshoot, has excellent ones.

    For pastries, Black Hound.

For bread, Panya on 9th St or Cafe Zaiya on Cooper Sq are sadly the best after so many bakeries in the EV have closed. You can get some Balthazar loaves at East Village cheese shop. And good challah at Moishe.

For bagels, Ess-A-Bagel on 1st near 19th would be my go-to.

    I'm sure I'm missing something...

    1. 9th street bakery on 9th just past 1st ave has decent bread, especially rye and pumpernickel, and it's cheap. ess-a-bagel is great, but david's bagels on the corner of 14th and 1st isn't a bad choice either.

The challah at 9th Street Bakery is really good, too.
For just plain white toast, the bread sold at the Polish deli on 1st Avenue, between St. Marks and 7th is good.

You can also get Balthazar, Tom Cat and some other good breads at the market on St. Mark's between 3rd and 2nd.

      2. try Tompkins Square bakery, on the north side of Tompkins Square park--great chocolate chip coconut cookies, almond croissants (not traditional french croissants at all, but tasty)

        1. Veniero's for cheesecake, Italian-style and NY-style. On 11th Street and First Ave.

          1. I second Tompkins Square bakery! The owner, Matt, is usually there and really friendly. Awesome peanutbutter cookies too.
