plum ice cream for sale by the truckload anywhere? okay, i can settle for a pint.

j3nnifers Aug 10, 2006 11:40 AM

i know a few japanese restaurants serve this in scoopfuls for dessert but i cannot find a place (market/ice cream store) that sells anything close to this for the life of me. it's the one that contains small bits of plum and is a pinkish-peach color. does anyone pleeeeeeease know of a place where i can buy it in truckloads?

the only place i regularly frequent for this is taiko. one time i got so desperate for a plum ice cream fix that i walked in around lunchtime and _begged_ the old guy at the counter for a scoop to-go. the guy looked at me like i was crazy and refused to allow for a to-go scoop, but he finally gave in. then the waitress who brought out the order nearly chatted with every other waitress there on the decidedly short walk back to the counter discussing how odd that someone would order one scoop of ice cream to-go. it was still worth all that hassle though, it was soooooooo good.

Fosselman's in Alhambra makes a fresh plum ice cream when it's in season. I don't know if they are currently carrying it though.

Hmm, I goto Fosselman's quite a bit and I don't believe they've ever offered a "plum ice cream".

Maybe you are thinking their date or black walnut ice cream?

As to the seasonal flavors, Chris told me that they are cutting back on their in-store offerings and making more of the specialty flavors for some of their outside clients.

Also, it should be noted that the ONLY seasonal flavors at Fosselmans' are peach, irish coffee, egg nog, root beer, cinamon, tuti-frutti and maybe one or two others.

perhaps the local marukai or mitsuwa market might have it?

i check mitsuwa egularly. the only plum-resembling thing i can find is a plum sherbet by maeda-en. i tried it and it's nothing like the ice cream. no plum pieces and it has a sour/tangy taste--bleh.

j3nnifers, i think you might have gotten PICKLED plum sherbert made with picked plums or umeboshi. When you go to these Japanese places, if you want the seasonal, summer stonefruit PLUM, be sure not to get anything with the word "umeboshi" or "ume." I like both plum and umeboshi flavored ice creams but they are definitely very, very different!

The Mikawaya store in the Japanese Village Plaza (originators of ice cream mochi) in Little Tokyo definitely has this by the scoop. You might be able to also buy it by the pint there.

Try Scoops if you want plum ice cream. Kim, the owner, will make just about anything you request (with advance notice of course).

pazzo gelato in silver lake is carrying an insane santa rosa plum gelato. it's so tart you'll pucker your lips. they paired it with chocolate for me. soooo good.

are you sure it's not plum sherbet? cause at the mitsuwa market, they only sell the sherbet kind.
