Really Cheap Eats - Two Dollar Tuesdays @ City Tavern, SF

Melanie Wong Aug 10, 2006 04:41 AM

A couple weeks ago on my way to the post office I noticed the signs for $2 Tuesdays (twosdays?) at City Tavern on Fillmore at what used to be called the Bermuda Triangle. It starts at 3pm and goes to 11pm or maybe until closing, can't remember. This was the tailend of our heat wave and sitting outside with a cold brew seemed pretty tempting, especially at a low price.

The $2 menu includes cheeseburgers, fries, wings, quesadillas, margherita pizza, macaroni, caesar salad, and a bunch of other bar bites. Plus, a selection of bottled and draft beers for the same price.

The food was surprisingly edible. Toasted bun and fresh garnishes accompanied the pre-cooked and reheated hamburger patty topped with American cheese. The chopped romaine for the caesar salad was crunchy and fresh, better than bagged from the supermarket. Even more surprising, the dressing was GOOD, light and lemony with well-balanced garlic and anchovy and no mayonnaise. The two soggy croutons were packaged and artificial tasting, and the cheese was domestic asiago-style yet shaved in thick shards. With a draft Fat Tire beer (more like flat tire as the picture shows), dining al fresco in this yuppy neighborhood set me back $8.51 with a two-buck tip.

Also surprising were the families with young children sharing the sidewalk tables for an early dinner in the sun. If you can stand eating downwind from KFC, this is an inexpensive place to fill up on beer and feed the kids.

I'm definitely out of touch with that area, so... I assume it's on the corner of Fillmore and Greenwich, but which corner? Not that I couldn't find it if I went there, but I'm curious.

Kitty-corner from the Balboa. City Tavern's location used to be the Dartmouth Social Club.
