Eating in South India

I was just looking at this board to learn things before I leave for about a year in north India, and then I thought I'd put a link to a long post I made three years ago about eating in India, mostly in the South:

thats a great post - well I am going to be making a trip to the north this year, not the south - hope you can share as you go along. I was interested in what you said about thali restaurants and am assuming that the same dynamic - lots of places serving very similar menus - will be true in the north as well as the south.

Im wondering, what did you look for in choosing among them all?
