change in lunch box at Douzo

FYI, we hit Douzo for lunch this weekend (place was totally empty at 12pm on Saturday which was a bit spooky) and found out they changed their version of the bento/lunch box.

Miso soup is no longer included (no idea why since it's not exactly expensive to make).
Instead of the various tempura items (veggies, shrimp, gyoza, etc.), you now get a chicken katsu (basically a deep fried breaded chicken cutlet). The sauce that came w/ the chicken katsu was a bit weird...more like BBQ sauce than a teriyaki sauce. The lunch box comes with a few tempura green beans and I liked the tempura sauce better than the katsu sauce.

We also tried the unagi (eel) tempura...a bit expensive at $5 for two pieces of eel, but it wasn't bad tasting. There were a few other weird things in the tempura section...they should try doing a tempura twinkie :-)

  1. Katsu isn't supposed to be served with teriyaki sauce, it's supposed to be served with katsu sauce... it's based on ketchup and vinegar, just like a common "BBQ sauce"...

I was thinking it was somehting based on worcheshire sauce.

        There's definitely a worcester-esque flavor in there.

So that's what Worcester tastes like...tee hee.

    2. I've had katsu sauce before at other places but this one was a bit more BBQ sauce tasting that I remembered :-P

      1. Some taste BBQier than others. I love pork katsu.

Would this turn you off from Douzo in the future? It's on my list of places to get to.

It wouldn't turn me off from Douzo. I think it's one of the best sushi places in the area (Osushi does the spider maki rolls better though IMHO). The chicken katsu dish is pretty big at katsu if I saw it correctly going to other tables when we went there last time. I actually had a craving for chicken katsu that day...just thought the sauce was odd enough to mention it :-)

I also forgot to mention that they seem to have cut back on the sashimi in the lunch box...I thought the old one had a few pieces of tuna as well; the current one has 3 nice thick slices of salmon, one slice of whitefish sushi, and one cooked shrimp sushi.
