quickie bangkok chow report

just got back from a weekend in bangkok; thought i'd give a brief chow report.

got in just after midnight on friday - checked in to the metropolitan and headed straight for their bar, where i chatted up the bartender to find out where the good nearby eats were. he told me about his favorite place to get pork in the city - a quick 15 min walk from the hotel. followed his directions to a stand close to the intersection of silom and convent and had FANTASTIC pork skewers. walked around a bit and grazed on some noodles, but had to come back for more pork.

after eating the street food the night before i was reluctant to fill up on the hotel breakfast, so i just had a nibble of toast and some juice. walked to the skytrain station and bought some fantastic pineapple with salt (what is in that salt besides chiles??).... delicious!!! in fact so delicious that i pretty much ate nothing but fruit until nighttime on sat. (if you are a fan of custard apple you MUST eat some in thailand - in fact all the fruit i bought on the street was delicious - i would kill to get produce like that in florida! at night went to the patpong market...didnt buy a thing but ate myself senseless!!! found excellent laab at a stand across from a pub that was selling german beers, also nearby found fantastic fried chicken...it was like nothing ive ever tasted before....the meat was very dry, but well spiced and incredibly flavorful.

sunday i did a bit of shopping and checked out the gourmet market at siam paragon and grazed from the multiple food stands there...the food was quite good, though i have to say that the food at the market was far superior. sunday night had dinner at cy'an, the restaurant in the metropolitan. i had an arugula salad that was ok - i found that the greens were not quite peppery enough for my taste. followed that up with a papardelle topped with braised chiang mai rabbit. this dish was OUTSTANDING. i ate every bite. i am a big fan of rabbit and i have to say that this was some of the best tasting rabbit *meat* i've had - the meat itself had incredible flavor and it was accented perfectly with a hint of orange and mint and a few olives. couldn't resist eating more fruit for dessert...also enjoyed some petit-fours - a rather generic chocolate as well as a delicious jellied tamarind and jasmine confection. sadly, i had to leave after dinner on sunday, but i am quite glad that i got a chance to eat at cy'an. i highly recommend the rabbit! i only wish i had dined with someone else as there was also a dish of 5 preparations of rabbit on the menu that i did not get to try.

  1. Convent Road is one of Bangkok's best dining experiences.
The carts cater to the area's office workers.
My wife, a lifelong Bangkok resident, always points at the carts and mentions "the best" this, that and whatever.

Unfortunately, most of Convent is only a weekday treat and now the streets are off limits on Mondays too!

What's the current status on the Convent Road vendors? Could you list the days and hours? I'll be in Bangkok from a Friday night to Tuesday morning. I'd hate to not be able to go here.

Curt, thanks for all your posts. They're a great aid.

Due to the enforcement of the street vending ban, Convent Road is a ghost town on Mondays. Tuesday mornings they are setting up for lunch.
