Escolar Served in Scotrun and Other Ruminations...
Well no one got back to me about any good food near Great Wolf Lodge, so I took it as a sign that there wasn't much to be had (and in the end was right). We had a super time in the waterpark, a solid breakfast at the Scotrun Diner (the Ham and Egg had an hour wait!) and better than average pizza and a Kit Kat Arctic Swirl at an unassuming ice cream shop on the Main Road (Harvest something???) We collected menus as soon as we drove into town (Pocono Brewing Company, Big Daddy's, Bailey's, Smuggler's Cover, Pangea etc..) The pickings were slim in the immediate environs. After talking to a bunch of people, many locals, at the pool who declared each one of the aforementioned restaurants worse than the next, we decided we'd try Bailey's (the least negative comments) just to avoid the horrific fare we checked out at the Lodge's ridiculously over-priced Camp and Critter Buffet. Ugh!!!
Bailey's salad bar was fine with a particularly excellent potato salad that reminded me of my grandma's, but the BBQ pit offerings we received were below par. Way below par. Mushy pulled chicken and pork both tasted of Liquid Smoke and the creamed spinach and sauteed mushroom sides were sour tasting. My mom actaully sent her sea scallops back as they were extremely "iodine" tasting. Strangely enough, escolar was the featured fish of the day.
It's rough to find in the best NYC fish restaurants these days what with all the "anal leakage" side effects attributed to its high indigestable fatty acid content. And the slabs they were serving up were WAY bigger than the suggested 4 oz portions suggested at top restaurants. The hostess overheard me commenting about it to a dinner-mate and was intrigued. She said she had never heard of such a thing. Strangely enough the next day at the pool one of the women at a family reunion was complaining about terrible cramping and the aforemntioned problem :) What had she eaten??? You guessed it? Escolar at Bailey's the night before!!!
