Miami Spice Recaps
To be honest, I'm not crazy about Chispa although I'm not particularly sure why. This visit was a pretty good one, with two colleagues from work. There was a surprisingly large quantity of food for the price, certainly too much for us. I enjoyed my fish main course the most of any of the dishes. My dessert -- the rice pudding -- was very good as well, and my companions kept gushing over their cheesecakes. I think they had a better overall experience than I did. We sat outside and I kept getting eaten by the mosquitos (15 bites in the time for our meal).
I love Cacao, and actually I've been there twice since Miami Spice began. Once I wasn't hungry enough for the full Spice menu, so I ordered off the regular menu -- a cucumber gazpacho with tuna tartare. The soup was light and refreshing, and well paired with the cubes of tuna which lent some nice body to the dish. I went back with my husband for the Spice menu which was similarly good. We each ordered different selections -- my ceviche starter was good, as was my lamb curry. For dessert, I had the sorbets and he had the chocolate mousse dome with passionfruit. The sorbet was intensely flavored, but the chocolate mousse dome is not my favorite despite being recommended by the host. I will say about Cacao that I have always had excellent service, and the host is a great guy who makes an effort to say Hello when I come in. He has started to joke about "my usual table."
Pascal's on Ponce dinner
Friday night's dinner was at Pascal's, our first visit there. The soup was a lobster bisque, which I found to be tasty and rich, if a little salty. The main course, duck, was very good though, paired with fingerling potatoes, pear and a brussel sprout, all of which came together well. The duck may have been a touch more cooked than I like it, but it was still very tender. The dessert was good as well although not particularly memorable. From a price standpoint, it was an excellent value to eat the Miami Spice menu at Pascal's... three courses for the usual price of one entree.
OLA Steak & Tapas dinner
This was a good meal. The white scallop ceviche was delicious, and the coconut lychee sauce was so good that I was tempted to lift up my bowl and drink from it as if OLA Steak were an Asian restaurant (I didn't have a spoon). I had the skirt steak churrasco and it was better than the first time I ate it there, very good in fact. One drawback, however, was that the Miami Spice menu didn't come with any sides, so I ordered patatas brava to eat with it. These had a good sauce but were a bit disappointingly lacking in crunch. Offsetting that though was the excellent (free) cheese bread, and I managed to coax two extra pieces of the bread from them to compliment my meal. I had the honey parfait for dessert on the recommendation of the server, and it was both tasty and unusual.
Doraku -- oops, no go
I tried to go to Doraku for the Miami Spice menu on Sunday night but when I got there, they said they didn't do it on the weekends. Instead I ordered off of the regular menu. The sashimi was very fresh, and in large pieces. The beef tataki had good flavor and was tender. The Doraku roll, which came highly recommended, was rather bland unfortunately. The best thing I ordered was the sake tasting, which had an excellent combination of high quality sakes at a very good price. Overall, I was uninspired by the place and I don't think I'll be going back for the real Miami Spice menu.
Please post recommendations of other places to eat the Miami Spice menu. Vix is definitely on my list now after reading the other post on it!
Tired of going to the multitude of restaurants settling for serving chilean salmon,chicken,or churasco as they go through the motions about attracting new customers which is the whole purpose of miami spice,I went to smith and wollensky for back to back lunches last week.One of best values of all the restaurants participating.I had a huge caesar salad to start for both lunches(you must specifically request anchovies to be served with it).First lunch i had the 10 oz filet mignon which is served with bearnaise sauce.Second lunch i had the pork crackling which was a huge piece of crispy pork.My dessert was cheesecake one lunch,which i enjoyed more than their chocolate lava dessert.I highly recommend going there.I dont think anyone will leave there hungry after lunch.
