Convivium vs. Tempo

I am trying to decide between the two for my wife's birthday. We have been to Tempo and loved everything from service, to food, to wines, etc. Convivium cam highly recommended and we have wanted to try it, but I read some very mixed reviews with complaints about service mostly. Any input about either place, good or bad, would be appreciated.

  1. If you have already been to Tempo a few times, I would recommend Convivium, just to try something new. It's true that the service at Convivium can be aloof sometimes, but the food is great, and the atmosphere is more romantic than Tempo. NB: Convivium does not take credit cards, so you have to bring cash.

I don't nkow if it changes your response, but we have noly been to Tempo once. Also, does convivium not take ALL credit cards? I thought they accepted AmEx.

I believe that Convivium does accept Amex. The food is also great. Tempo is more "polished" to me, but Convivium is much more romantic. Sitting in the garden I felt transported to Europe. And the duck filled ravioli with sauteed radicchio is one of the best pastas I've had in recent memory.

    2. I really like Convivium. Tempo is excellent, but after a while, not too surprising. Convivium swings for the fences, and some dishes are home runs, while others are ground-outs... talk with your waiter, think about the options, if you order smartly, you can have an amazing meal at Convivium.

      1. I think that you won't go wrong at Convivium or Tempo. But I would make another suggestion: Garden Café on Vanderbilt Ave. is a really perfect two person birthday place and at the same price point as Convivium and Tempo.

        1. Loved Convivium...and you can linger over a plate of pasta, and they will not rush you out, in my experience. A good thing!

          1. We love CONVIVIUM. The food is wonderful, the service excellent, the setting elegant and romantic.

We have had an uneven experience with TEMPO and it is often almost empty. I find the food at CONVIVIUM more complex, more unusual, and more pleasing.

I second the tip on GARDEN CAFE. My only problem is their very limited menu.
