Thommy G's - Audubon, NJ

  • 0

Had a really nice dinner here Friday (8/4/2006). Here's my take:

The room itself is beautifully done. High ceilings, huge windows with lot's of natural light, beautiful millwork, a huge bar, grand piano (had someone playing and singing this night - some nights it plays by itself!), and a few gorgeous antiques. But...there are 3 views available...the back of the garage on Nicholson Road, the railroad tracks on Atlantic Ave, or the parking lot. Once the sun goes down this is all a moot point.

The staff was great - attentive but not overbearing. Manager visited each table. Bartender is very pleasant ( we spent about 1 1/2 hours at the bar after our meal).

The menu...check it out here http://www.thommyg.com/. Italian with a flair of New Orleans is how it's described.

There were 4 in our party. We started with drinks, and appetizers of Clams Italiano and Sauteed Calamari. Both were very good - the clams were tender and fresh, as was the calamari. My only complaint, seems calamari needs to be fried so the marinara has something to stick to. No one else thought this was a problem.

Entrees - our friends had Veal Parmagiana and Shrimp Scampi. Both thoroughly enjoyed their entrees. My wife ordered Shrimp FraDiavolo and said it was good, but the sauce was a little thick to her liking. I had Osso Buco, which was very good and I would highly recommend it.

Desserts were Bananas Foster (not done table side - apparently this is a nightly decision), and Tiramisu. Both were very good.

The damage - $250 included a generous tip for 4 people, included drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts. I felt the value was pretty good - didn't feel like I just spent a bunch of money for a mediocre meal.

I'll go back for sure. Don't know if the residents of Audubon will support Thommy G's or not - pretty expensive. They'll need to draw in out of towners, but once word gets out I don't think this will be a problem.
