New place caught my nose as I was walking through North Beach: Giordano Bros. (303 Columbus near Broadway). They sell "all-in-one" sandwiches ($6.50-6.75) filled with your choice of grilled meat (sausage, coppa, pastrami, cheesesteak, smoked turkey), provolone, french fries, and cole slaw, inspired by Primanti Bothers in Pittsburgh, PA.

I didn't have the appetite but it looked good. Flyer says the bread's from Italian French Bakery, the meats from Molinari's, and produce from Bob Sbragia. Tomorrow through 9/25, buy one, get another for a nickel.

Does that mean it's open 24hrs, as is Primanti? Not bloody likely.

My recollection from grad school days is that is was better as a hangover cure than the time I took it to the Igloo for a Sharks game. (Tryed twice in the two years I lived in the Pitt)

Seems as though the Hockey season is off, so I'll try to get a hangover before the 25th and give it a try.

FYI, the first thing I learned in Pittsburgh is that there are 11 Pittsburg's (without a final 'h') but only one Pittsburgh (with 'h'). The Strip lives.

When a co-worker walked in with one of those sandwiches, I thought it sounded like way, way too much. French fries in a sandwich?? Yuck! But when he goaded me endlessly to take a bite, I finally gave in and.....wow, I thought it was really good!! I never eat that kind of stuff, but I have to say I took a second bite, and pretty much wanted a third. The cole slaw really adds the perfect balance. Ha!

I can't find the phone number to this place anywhere, and would love to order up a bunch of them. Anyone know? Is it still in business?
