Catch of the Day - Wellfleet, Cape Cod, MA

Was on the Cape for 2 days this week and went with my family to Catch of the Day, a place on Route 6 in S. Wellfleet (across from the road that goes to Marconi Beach). I don't remember seeing this place last year, or perhaps it had a different name, but from what I can tell the place is new.

We had a pretty nice meal there....5 of us had no wait to be seated at 6:30 PM on a Monday. The place is very casual, only 8 tables or so, menu has all the usual seafood choices (fried, grilled, raw, chowder, lobster, etc).

Clam chowder was very good, some of the best I've had on the Cape or anywhere. Also shared a spinach salad with nuts, goat cheese, cranberries. Large serving, nice to have this as a side dish for seafood. I was most impressed by my dish....blackened scallops, served with sweet potato fries and fresh salsa. The sweet potato fries were outstanding, and the scallops were spicy and perfectly cooked. Most seafood on the menu can be blackened or grilled (grilled comes with pasta). Others at the table had fried fisherman's platter and fried clam strips. The strips contained an impressively high amount of belly in them, which made them much more flavorful and much less chewy, which can be good or bad depending on your opinion). Some family members commented that they thought the batter was a bit salty, but I didn't think it was. For me the main downside to this place was the french fries. They were kind of mealy and undercooked and just not exciting, especially compared to the crispy, perfect sweet potato fries. Maybe this was a fluke though, who knows....

Overall, I recommend checking out this place if you're in Wellfleet (or even nearby in Truro or Eastham). Similar food and prices to everywhere else (Arnolds, etc.) but sit-down, calm atmosphere...plus the highly recommended blackened scallops.
