we need a place that serves high quality food but is not overly in love with itself for a low key dinner tonight. A memorable meal. something south asian perhaps?

How about Helmand in Cambridge? The Afghan food is outstanding, and the prices are reasonable for such a nice place.

For good Indian food, how about India Quality in Kenmore Square or Shanti in Dorchester? I'd say that India Quality is better, but Shanti's atmosphere is very nice.

Helmand is a great idea -- delicious food, hospitable welcome -- but call ahead for a reservation, they can't always take walk-ins. Here is a menu with out-of-date prices. http://cambridge.zami.com/business?BU...

What about Khao Sarn in Coolidge Corner or Elephant Walk on Beacon Street?

How about Thai at Dok Bua? It's south asian, low key, inexpensive, good food and byob. Kao Sarn is down the road a bit and has some nicer atmosphere if you are looking for a slightly quieter, intimate feel.

Malaysian in Allston at Aneka Rasa or Penang in Chinatown?

Lu's in Harvard Square (formerly Pho Pasteur) is a great spot. Cheap, low key, fast and very very good.

thanks for the suggestions. We dined at Helmand. It was exactly what we were looking for: warm ambience, excellent food, good service. Thanks for the replies.
