where can i find top notch italian food in montreal? i'm looking for somewhere with great beef carpaccio as well as vegetarian-friendly options (though that part should be simple with a decent selection of pastas and risottos).

thanks!

I would recommand a really good Italian place, that is not traditional however. It is called Misto on Mont-Royal street near Mentana. The beef carpaccio is one of the best I ever tasted. The pastas are not what we all know from our youth, like lasagna and meat balls, it is more refined and inventive. You will not be sorry you went there. It is always full of people so you might consider a reservation.

I have scanned the menu once or twice and have been scared off by the prices. $40+ for a plate of pasta...had better be some seriously kick-ass noodles. I file this one under "expense-account crowd."

An italophile friend of mine describes the place as for corporate lawyers who can charge the bill to their clients' accounts. (A member of the bar himself, he's in the position to know.) He also knocks the grub.

Unfortunately I have not had much luck in finding great italian places in Montreal.

One place I enyoy in little Italy is Tre Marie

They make good simple rustic homemade country italian cuisine at reasonable prices and offer warm friendly service.

In 15 years I have never had a bad meal

They also having parking which helps in that area
