County Cookin' in MS Delta, off the Tamale Trail

I will be meandering down MS via Natchez Trace & the Tamale Trail in the Delta, staying in Greenwood (via Tupelo), Port Gibson & Natchez. I am wondering about any country or soul food places along the way for a boy originally from the South but lives in NYC.

Thanks.

  1. If you know about the Tamale Trail, then I would assume you're familiar with the oral histories of Greenwood restaurants on the Southern Foodways Alliance website. If not, go to www.southernfoodways.com and take a look. If you go through Vicksburg, stop at Walnut Hills, where you can have fine traditional Southern food served family style around a revolving table.
If you should detour through Greenville to check out Doe's, you might enjoy Sherman's plate lunches at lunch time and their great steaks and seafood at night. Sherman's has the finest lemon and chocolate meringue pies in the Western world, and I promise I'm not just saying that because I grew up on them. :-)

    1. Oooh, Mississippi gal here! Here's some great suggestions for Greenwood: Luscos (awesome place. have to get the broiled shrimp!). The Crystal Grill is also a great old place. Giardenias is great for a steak! Also suggest Doe's if you're headed to Greenville. The Bourbon Mall is fabulous as well, though it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere. They have great blues on Fri and Sat nights. Here's their info: 105 Dean Road, Bourbon; (662) 686-4389. In Clarksdate, Morgan Freeman's restaurant and club are great. Madidi is the restaurant, and Ground Zero is the blues club. In Cleveland, Crawdads and KC's are also faves. Good luck and post again if you have any more questions!
