Florence Fabricant is reporting that Jacques Torres now has ice cream and ice cream sandwiches. anyone had any yet? is it the same as Almondine's gelato or something completely different?

And the question that begs to be asked: is DUMBO becoming an ice cream destination?

With Brooklyn Ice Cream, gelato at Almondine, ice cream at Jacques Torres, gelato at Rice (Ciao Bella), pints of Ben & Jerry's, Haagen Daz, etc. at Peas & Pickles AND pints of La Cremellaire, Ronnybrook, Wine Sorbet and other interesting brands at Foragers, (plus Blue Pig for those that like it is only a couple of blocks away in Bklyn Heights), is there a better 5 block area in NYC for ice cream right now?

I live in Dumbo and can attest to the myriad delicious ice cream options. I'm partial to Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, but why not try them all?

I didn't have Jacques' ice cream, but I was in there this past weekend. The ice cream sandwiches - traditional with two chocolate chip cookies sandwiching ice cream of your choice - were in a freezer in the front, individually wrapped in cellophane. To be honest, I'm sure they are delicious, but the presentation made them seem overly mass produced, which is out of place in that store, where every item feels like it's made by hand, just for you. It therefore didn't call to me.

If any has had one, by all means report back!

Oh! I've read about it in the Times today. It's available in Jacques' store in SoHo, too. I'm planning to go there soon to cool off from this insane heat wave we're having. I'm sure it should be great.

so in the interest of research, I'm currently eating a Jacques Torres ice cream sandwich. I'm having the chocolate one sandwiched by 2 chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are very good - they're the ones they sell from time to time - with big chunks of Jacques Torres chocolate -not tiny chips. according to the store, the ice cream is made in house by Jacques Torres and it's not connected at all with the gelato sold by Almondine even though Jacques is a partner in Almondine. The chocolate ice cream tastes like their hot chocolate - it's light texture-wise - more icy than heavy cream. they also sell a wicked version which i didn't try. all in all it's miles above a chipwich. quite good on a VERY hot day.

and I'm still throwing down the gauntlet as to where in NYC is there a better 5 block radius for ice cream lovers than Dumbo?

ice cream sandwiches are $5. The NY Times says chocolate-dipped cones are $4 and triple-scoop sundaes in bowls of dark chocolate $6 with a choice of sauces. I didn't happen to check on the cones or sundaes when I was in the store.

Stopped by for the ice cream sandwiches this weekend. They are huge and plenty for two average sized appetites to share. I asked about the sundaes and cones and they mentioned that the Times messed up on that, as they are offered only in the Manhattan branch, due to space limitations.

They don't seem mass produced at all. The cookies look and taste like homemade. We tried the Singapore chili sandwich, which is basically ice cream akin to their Wicked Hot Chocolate, between 2 delicious chocolate chip cookies.

I think the OP got it wrong. Everything at JACQUES TORRES and ALMONDINE is fresh and made on the premises. The addition of two more ice cream places in DUMBO is very welcome.

BUBBIES also has delicious homemade ice cream...a la mode on a slice of their home made pies!
