Need a Scwarma FIX

Hey Chowhounders,

I've been craving a good Schwarma fix since returning to NYC after being gone a long time.
I tried Ali Baba (MacDougal St) and it wasn't as good as I remember it---it has been more than a decade.
After reading all the hoopla about how great Mamoon's (MacDougal) is I was let down.
I've been to Jerusalem on B'way at about 105 and while in the past it was good, the night I went recently was lousy. The regular guy wasn't there, it seems two younger men were in control. The pita fell apart, the lamb was beyond greasy and the sandwich was not very flavorful. Two days later I got the feeling that the place's hygiene standards had slipped somewhat.

Is there some other place you would recommend? Thanks

  1. Mr Broadway on Boradway between 36th and 37th Streets... GREAT shwarma and salad bar. Try the sandwich, the bread is also incredible...

    1. Alfanfanoose on Maiden Lane.

      1. As always, Azuri (51st and 10th) is probably tops in my book. Pick-A-Pita (38th btw 7th and 8th) does an awesome schawafel (i.e., schwarma and falafel together) that's just a step below Azuri. You might also want to check out Famous and Olympic Pitas in the outer boroughs. Here's a link to my recent review of the latter:

        1. Olive Tree, across from Ali Baba and a couple of doors from Mamoun's has may favorite lamb shawarma (all sliced lamb meat like Ali Baba, but better overall), but they're often out and it takes hours until the next one is ready. Lunch time is usually the best bet, I think.

The beef shawarma at bread & olive is good too.
