I, personally, like the view at the Rise Bar in the Ritz-Carlton at Battery Park. It has a wonderful view of New York Harbor.

For my money, one of the best views isn't in Manhattan at all, but in Brooklyn, and that would be the River Cafe. If you're talking about views from a height, River Cafe isn't your place, but if you're talking about spectacular views in general, try RC at dusk.

Or for only the cost of transportation, take a walk on the Brooklyn Promenade, which itself is free, at dusk any evening. You'll get essentially the same view as from the River Cafe without having to part with a lot of money...

top of the rock is really spectacular. you get a gorgeous 360 degree view of the city.

(but you can't eat up there.)

The rooftop of Alma--it isn't touristy beautiful but there's a great view of Manhattan, especially at sunset.

roof top of the met has a spectacular view and is good for a martini and snack.

230 fifth's rooftop has a straight on view of the empire state, perhaps a bit too linear to rank in the tops but still quite impressive. however, the scene there is pretty awful.

Totally agree about 230 Fifth. The scene and service are terrible there.

I second the vote for the roof at Alma.
