Melons from Love Farms

Planning to make a cold melon soup to take to a German riesling tasting on Saturday night, I'd picked up two Crenshaws. But cutting them open on Saturday morning to find that they were hard and tasteless, I dashed off in search of something more flavorful.
At the Santa Rosa farmers market at the Veterans Memorial Hall, I knew I was in the right place when I could catch the powerful fragrance of these melons from more than 6' away. When I explained that I needed super-ripe ones, the man at the Love Farms booth picked out two for me ($5), and then gave me two more that had a couple soft spots for free. He said these were San Juans, although they looked more like a French variety to me.
They did the trick and were glorious in the ginger and lime scented soup. The dinner guests asked if there were papaya or mango in the blend, in addition to melon. No, not all, that's just the complex flavor of these melons shining through.
The stand at the farm in Healdsburg is open every day during the season.
