Indian Restaurants in Santa Rosa?

Any CHer recs for Indian restaurants in (or near) Santa Rosa?

Any/all price ranges gladly considered.

We're heading over there later today (Sunday) and are having a major craving... help!

We (the DP and I) had dinner this evening at Sizzling Tandoor. I read (on another CH board, maybe?) that the cooks are the same, even under the new owners, and I believe it. The food was as delicious as ever -- I've never had a bad dish there.

The service, however, was NOT good. The place was busy, although not packed, and the staff couldn't handle it. We were left waiting far too long before having our food order taken (half a bottle of Kingfisher, sipped slowly), with staff seeming to go out of their way to avoid eye contact as we sat there. Then as if to make it up to us, the food was rushed out -- I believe I should have at least as much time between the arrival of the starter and that of the main course as I did between having my drink order and my food order taken, but instead I had to grab for the remaining appetizers to avoid having them cleared away to make room for the arriving mains. All around us were similar difficulties -- people waiting ages for their food and people being presented with the wrong dishes (no, sorry, we didn't order that) seemed the most common. One guy on staff was in such a rush that he a) ran into my DPs chair while dashing behind him, b) knocked all the sweetener packets from one table onto the floor, and c) sprayed a hefty spritz of cleaning liquid on our food while enthusiastically wiping down the table next to us.

So be aware -- the food at Sizzling Tandoor is excellent, but you may find the service frustratingly below your expectations.

The food at Pamposh was a delight. I have tried several fridays in a row and enjoyed their specials. The chef takes food to the next level with his new creations. I love their harmonious interior and the smells which emanate from the kitchen. The owners are very attentive. My wife and I always have had a nice time there and I would like to support the statement made by others here.

I'm a tikka masala freak. But realizing that this is hardly the real deal, I'm a fan of Pamposh's Jal Frazzey, Sag Paneer and the apricot shrimp. The onion kulcha rocks and i dig their mango chutney.

I've had mostly so-so experiences at Sizzling Tandoor. The buffet is less than stellar. Kebab and Curry is pretty good, but my money is on Pamposh.

What's your favorite dish at Pamposh?

Just tried Kebab and Curry - so so. The owner wouldn't stop visiting our table, kind of annoying. One of our curry dishes tasted burned.

                Hi Melanie,

The Indian restaurant post - and I - are both alive! Trader Joe's in Napa has delicious packaged Indian dishes (shipped from India; no artificial ingredients). We tried three the other night. If I can dig the boxes out of the recycling, I'll let you know what they were. One was spinach with cubes of soft cheese. It had a nice afterburn.

We went to Indian Oven on Fillmore several weeks ago with friends and weren't blown away - nor were we disappointed. They gave us a high chair for our duaghter, were very friendly, and the food was fresh and enjoyable. I ordered the Sula chenin. It went over like a lead zeppelin. No body, no varietal character, no acid, no fun... it tasted like the delivery might have been left on the sidewalk for a couple of hours on a warm day. (Nothing against the restaurant, or the winery)

Conversely, last night we had an '05 Pichot Vouvray. Delicious.

That bottle of Sula chenin definitely sounds DOA.

The Indian packs from TJ's are great for camping trips.

I noticed Costco is carrying the same Tasty Bites Indian packs in 12/pkg. It's quite interesting how Indian food has joined the culinary mainstream.

Thanks Melanie. I'm leaning towards Kabab & Curry (I'm curious about the Sula chenin blanc...)

I'll post a follow-up tomorrow, wherever we end up.

Cool, I've had the Sula chenin twice. Didn't like the 2002 much, but it was in some stiff competition.

Nearly a year later, a second showing (perhaps a new vintage) showed better. And, it was better than the Sauvignon blanc.

I'll be very interested in hearing how Sula is coming along with two more years of experience.

Hi Tony, the one I've heard the most buzz about is Pamposh, http://www.pamposhrestaurant.com/

                Here's Alexandra's post on it.

Have also heard good things about Kabab & Curry,
                http://kababandcurryhouse.com/

I haven't had a chance to try either yet.

Sizzling Tandoor is under new ownership.

When did Sizzling Tandoor change owners? I always liked that place, but it's probably been at least 8-9 months since I was last there.

                  Anyone been recently?

Hmm, seems I noticed the sign announcing new ownership in the last year. Here's the website that announced new owners.
                    http://www.sizzlingtandoor.com/

But more interestingly, also Indo-chinese, South Indian (dosas, idlis), and Gujarati thali! Plus a Cruvinet at the wine bar.

Looks like I need to keep up with this cuisine locally, as it seems Santa rosa how has more interesting options than San Francisco. Kabab & Curry features Rajasthani, and winemaker dinners. I would love to hear some 'hound reports on the regional specialties at these restaurants.
