Ogunquit, Maine & Amherst, Mass. - looking for lobster!
We'll be in Amherst, Mass. for several weeks and visiting Ogunquit, Maine for a weekend. I love lobster, but with a family of 6 (all who love lobster), it's a bit expensive.
Can anyone suggest places that are reasonable and good?
Also, any suggestions you might have for just about any type of restaurants near Amherst (within 30 miles)?
Thanks, thanks, thanks!
A budget solution might be to buy some lobsters at a local supermarket where they will steam them for you. Try your hand at making lobster rolls or simply rush them home where freshly cooked corn on the cob and salads are waiting. Having the supermarket cook them keeps your kitchen from getting hot and smelly esp since you are trying to feed 6. In the Concord NH area, Demoulas/Market Basket typically has the cheapest price on lobsters ($4.99/lb last week).
I agree that the best and cheapest way to have lobster is to get it cooked for you. In Ogunquit, heading north on Route One on the left side is a place with a big lobster sign (something farm- the name escapes me) where you can buy live lobsters or have them cooked. Places to eat out for lobster are Barnicle Billy's (ogunquit) Oarweed (ogunquit) Ogunquit Lobster Pound, Lobster in the Rough- behind the Lobster Barn Restaurant on Route One in York. I don't know how the prices compare but you could simply call a few places and ask them the price per pound. Hope you find what you are looking for.
Wow! Thanks for the tips. I didn't even think realize they will steam them for you at the supermarket. Wish they did that in So. Calif.
Do you know if they'll do it for you in Mass. or are the prices much, much higher? We'll only be in Maine for 1 weekend & sure would like to get it that way near Amherst!
re: Kip in Ca
Market Basket in Mass. has lobster for $5.99/lb. still, and they will cook them for you. Sometimes they have already cooked lobsters packaged for sale at $4.99/lb. Lobster sizes are 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 lbs. These prices have been holding for the past 3 weeks, and I'm all lobstered out. To much of a good thing is not good.
The Big Y supermarket on University Drive in Amherst will cook lobsters for you. I don't eat the stuff anymore, so I don't know current prices, but I suspect they're a dollar or two higher than in Boston, not much more. Big Y will steam other kinds of seafood, too, and they make their own fish and chips.
There's another, larger supermarket, Stop & Shop, around the corner on Route 9. I know they have a lobster tank, but I'm not sure whether they'll prepare it for you. Prices are likely to be a bit higher there.
By the way, there are numerous good restaurants in the Amherst/Northampton area, so if you want to go out and for some reason don't want lobster, you will have some decent choices.
