Flatbush Farm - Not so good

We tried Flatbush Farm last night, the new place near 6th ave/corner of Flatbush. It was prime time but not that crowded. Even the very lovely patio had lots of room. We tried three things off the menu and had two glasses of wine. The onion rings were very good, but the sausage and salmon toasts were not that exciting. I was also a little shocked that our wine was $9 a glass (when we asked about wine, he rattled off his five whites -- I should have asked about the prices) considering they were served in tiny little glasses. Overall a very average and more-than-I-wanted to spend experience. Anyone else been there?

    1. i strongly second your point on the tiny and expensive tumblers of wine. i personally think that the atmosphere is confused, and not inspiration enough in the food to even comment. but i must say that the staff is wonderful! i live in the neighborhood, and the choice music and friendly vibe draw me in.

        1. I love flatbush farm, maybe because it's so close to my apartment, but i agree that the staff is wonderful...I've only had the onion rings but they were delightful. I like their beer selection as well and can't get enough of their backyard. the expensive wine is small glasses is a bit of a bummer though...

            1. i think you both have valid points, but if you had any chance to get to know the place, (by the way a favorite of mine and lots of friends and neighbors), their restaurant did not officially open until a few weeks ago. their food is fantastic. the tuna belly and spatzle with wild mushroom ragout are my favorites. the atmosphere is always inviting and the wine and beer selection ever growing.

                1. honestly? the friendly service and nice atmosphere would bring me back to the farm (especially since they're very new, as one poster mentioned), though the brunch i had there last weekend was less than worth the price, which was surprisingly high. picky eaters beware: this is extremely heavy fare...i had the 'toad in a hole' and while the cheddar was nice and tasty, the bread they used was so thick i felt like i'd ingested a brick by the time the meal was over. my friend got basic eggs with sides which were fine, though the grits alongside were, according to her, the most buttery she'd had in a long time-- and she's from kentucky. their coffee was great, and the service as everyone is saying is very welcoming, so i'd be happy to try a dinner there....but may wait to see if their brunch menu expands before heading back!

                    1. I was there on Sunday (3.09.08) with a friend. He had been there previously and suggested it as a nice neighborhood brunch place. I should have seen it as a bad omen when we waited 10 minutes at the door without a single person coming to see us about a table. When we were finally seated, we waited another 10 minutes for someone to offer drinks. Mind you, it wasn't very busy as we were there toward the end of the brunch time. I ordered the $12 hamburger with bacon and cheese. Each were $2 extra making the total a hefty $16. Mind you, it tasted fine and the fries were great (sea salt. nice touch) but $16 for a tiny burger probably made chuck is a bit much. This point was emphasized when we left and I saw a brunch place down the street serving $10 Kobe beef burgers. Should have gone there. My friend's "poached" eggs were a mess and he had to wait several minutes for toast. His grits were excellent but hardly made up for the rest. The service was so bad we had to flag down different members of the waitstaff for everything we needed. Ketchup and mustard, napkins, forks, water. All of these came separately and well after our food arrived. After having to get a 5th person to bring us a bill, I was convinced that Flatbush Farm might be the worst brunch experience I've had. The food was average at best, incredibly overpriced, and the service was completely unacceptable. It's a drag that the first time I write something on chowhound is such a bad comment. I wouldn't recommend Flatbush Farm at all.

My wife and I ate there once last fall and both of our main dishes were way too oversalted (and I like a decent amount of salt) We will not be back.

Its a shame because we were big fans of Bistro St. Marks, which used to be in the spot.
