Going on the "Rails to Rim" tour and don't want to eat at Max and Thelmas. Is there any decent food in Wiliams AZ?

We took the Grand Canyon railroad last year and stayed in Williams. We didn't find anything worthwhile to eat there.

Did you find anything at least tolerable?

We only had breakfast at some greasy diner and that was enough to make us wait until we got back to Flaggstaff or home to Phoenix later in the day.

          Was this Pine Country Restaurant?

A while back (maybe 2 or 3 years ago) I ate breakfast at Old Smoky's Restaurant in Williams based on Jane & Michael Stern's recommendation. I don't have any notes from that visit, but as I remember it was a pretty good breakfast: good enough that I'd go back again. It's a pancake house, but I believe they also have lunch, though I haven't tried it.

A quick search of the chowhound archives will also bring up previous threads relevant to Williams:

Williams is one of those odd places in transition from almost defunct Route 66/I40 Bypass victim to reluctant tourist/retirement community. Rod's is a holdover from the "bad old days", where one can still get a good meal when sticking to basics. Really. Steak, fried chicken - anything not too complicated.
