How do you Mojito?

Growing up in Miami, I've had some amazing mojitos. The ones I've had were always made of lots of ice, crushed mint, lime juice, rum, and sugar. But it seems like every place I've been to in LA puts soda in it. Is this normal? I prefer it without, and I always make it sans soda at home.

I've been to the place in Havana that invented the Mojito. They add soda. FYI.

i used to bartend at a peruvian place that serves excellent mojitos. we'd put a splash of soda in it becuase many people found the drink too strong without it.
