I've been hearing a lot of good things about Sunshine Market lately. What do you suggest there?

While Googling for an address, I came across this article about "Calistoga barbecue legend Doug Wattson" who is a full-time chef at Sunshine Market. It seems though his BBQ skills are not used at the market.

So, what are your thoughts on Sunshine Market?

I like Sunshine, but it can be pricey and insanely crowded at lunch on weekdays. They have a very good butcher, and will special order meat or fish. The produce is good, with a strong selection of organic stuff. The cheese department is cramped but stuffed with goodies, including an olive bar. The one or two people working in the cheese department will be very helpful if you approach them, and have come up with creative solutions to my various pairing queries. I've never asked for cheese samples, but they probably would give you a sample if you asked. They have a large selection of prepared foods, including sandwiches, desserts, hot food, sushi, soups and salads/antipasti. I think the sandwiches are good but pricey, and some of the sandwich makers are relentlessly & obnoxiously slow. Still, it's better than Oakville grocery IMHO. The deli has been very helpful in putting together lunch platters, box lunches and platters of fruit, crackers, nuts and cheese. The parking lot is small and can be hard to navigate when it's packed.

Doug has some great dishes in the deli/take out case though you won't see too much BBQ. Try their Chicken Dumpling soup if it is offered on the day you visit, it is one of my faves.
