Boston area - Papa Gino's

I don't know how far out this chain goes - it's certainly all over the place in the Boston area. On an afternoon where the bathroom sink drain had to be replaced... and I had to make my mandatory 2 trips to the hardware store for any such home maintenance project... we ended up calling the Papa Gino's, as it was on the way back from the hardware store - and I was most certainly not in the mood to cook, and wife was at work.

This is a decent pizza. It is a real, tossed, pizza - not pre-proofed, with a white-bread like crumb, like the greek places. The crust comes out much better than any other chain I've been to. Given the sparcity of really good crusts in the available area, even in non-chains, this is a really decent pizza. Their sauce is not too sweet - something that completely turns me off. The only thing I really missed, was the grease, and the size (which goes hand in hand) - there wasn't a nice pool of grease in the middle. A real pizza folds across the point and in the middle, and the grease drips off... I guess they must have used skim mozzarella or something. But the flavor was quite good anyway - maybe I should have dripped some evoo on it.

I also had a part of an Italian sub and a buffalo strip (they have no wings). The sub roll was very good, but the condiments didn't exactly suit me - I like banana peppers, rather than the diced hot cherry peppers, and they didn't have enough of those. I hate the very concept of buffalo strips - why remove one of the key elements of the original invention, the deliciousness of the wing meat, and substitute with the blandness of white, breast meat. But the sauce was "correct" (meaning something close to Frank's and butter).

I despise chains for ethical reasons and have always posted here against them. So I thought I would post my kudos (for what they are worth). Of course, this isn't the best pizza, subs, buffalo whatever I've ever had - but it'll do in a pinch. I'll drown my guilt over going to a chain, (and possibly helping to put some hard-working creatively spirited entrepreneur out of business), by redoubling my efforts to spend money at the independents... starting tonight at Pho88, with the wonderful shabu-shabu!
