Macau Street, dinner last night
It was my first dinner at Macau Street. I used to live in Hong Kong and I know Macau very well. I once even did the research and writing for a tourist guide map to Macau. Anyhow, we stuck to the "Traditional Macau Dishes." They were Chinese-style Macau dishes, not Portuguese, and they were pretty good. We had the roast squab, which was excellent, perfectly cooked, accompanied with a good mixture of pepper and salt and a lemon to squeeze over it. It was among the best I've had in L.A. We had the crispy shrimp which were also excellent, although a little oily. We had the house special crab, which was good, garlicky, a little peppery; but it can't hold a candle to the crabs I've had in Hong Kong or Macau, and isn't at all the same sort of beast as the crab casserole at Fernando's in Macau which is one of the great dishes on the planet. The ong choy with spicy bean curd sauce was good. And the egg tarts were; well, I prefer the Portuguese style natas that don't have quite as flaky (a lot of lard I think) a crust, but still, they had a nice and not overly sweet flavor. In all, the works came out to just under $50 for three of us, plus tip, and it seemed like a very good deal for the money. The only real complaint was that beer wasn't available and it would have gone down well.
