Sri-Lankan Food in Toronto?

Hey folks,

Does anyone have recs for Sri-Lankan food in TO? I have only heard of Rashnaa on Wellesley from other posts on this board. Have car, will travel.

As in "food made by Sri-Lankans"? That would include around 60% of the city's menus.

Yeah, funnny how from groucho burgers, to firkin wings , to kalendar scrolls, there are so many male sri lankan cooks in the kitchens of toronto. Then you realize why Curry chicken is the Tuesday special at some of these places :)

My only time at Rashnaa was disappointing, and I'd say Hopper Hut is much better - which is usually the case for most suburban places for South Asian food, they outclass most of the ones in the city area. But the best thing to do is drive down Ellesmere or Lawrence (in Scarborough) and just pop into some of those amazing little takeout places in the endless stream of strip malls. We try various ones now and then, and get cheap and delicious stringhoppers, sambar, kothu roti and the like - I'll try to dig up some names and addresses. Anjappar Chettinad, on Eglinton, also does good appams and biryanis, if you want a sit-down dinner - they have a website.

Madras palace USED to be good..ive been going there for over 10 years...
now the place just microwaves most of the food and it's hit or miss

Saravanabhavan at woodside mall is making some waves. Vegetarian never tasted so good. However, the place is dirty.

Maybe I was there on a, uh, on day but when I went to Saravana Bhavan recently, the place was spotless. The food was very good, though not as good as the one by the Shanti Theatre in Chennai. It's a hell of a lot closer though!

By any chance, has anyone heard of Ammar or Amar by the Kennedy Subway Station (Kennedy and Eglinton)? They supposedly serve really great Sri Lankan food... has anyone ever been?

there's Hopper Hut at Kennedy & Ellesmere - it's been a while since I've been there but it's been around for years and has never disappointed in the past - great mutton rolls, dosa/thali...

I find the hoppers at Rashnaa far better than Hopper Hut.

Madras Palace - Ellesmere East of Midland in Scarborough is outstanding.
Try the Thali -a veggie variety platter. Shrimp Curry is also amazing. We have been to this restaurant 50 times (at least) and have never been disappointed.

2nd madras palace...i know my south indian food and this is the best place to go for it in the city
