I'm looking for a great hero (hot or cold). I love Italian Subs as well and would love to find someplace on the UWS that makes a great hero. Thanks.

If you're not stuck on having a "hero" check out the tortas at the Supertaco truck on W. 96th Street. Delicious, filling and cheap! I particularly like the carne enchilada, or the bistec, though I haven't tried them all yet.

I like their lengua taco, but that's not everbody's taste.

        I second it, though.

      I have been to
      Panino Sportivo Roma
      1231 Amsterdam Ave.
      New York, New York 10027
      http://paninosportivo.com/panino.htm

This place is very cool. They serve wine and really good sandwiches.. They have a website..

I have also heard good things next door to them, but have not been there.. Hamilton Deli or Subsconcious for subs..

And my final option is to make your own.. I know this isnt the italian sub you are looking for but, They have great french baguette at Le Pain Quotidien 494 Amsterdam Ave At W 84th St. I have schaller and weber ham on order with the an Artisanal Selection Camembert. I am looking forward to my saturday lunch..

I second that Panino is good but stay away from anything with cheese: it makes a cheesy mess that is hard to eat. A bit pricey for what you get, though. Subconciuos is very good. Exactly the place you want if you are looking for a big stupid greasy sub stuffed with nasty nonsense.

These are all a bit north, though. Further south, unfortunately, there is not much. Two good choices, though: Alibaba on A'dam and 85th is the best schwarma in the city. Pay the $10 and get it laffa. Expensive but comes with great all-you-can-eat 'salad' bar. Get the spicy carrot slices, the egggplant (greasy goodness) for sure but everything is good. Murray's on B'way and like 90th is also very good. Try the whitefish salad on a bialy.

          What does "laffa" mean?

Steer clear of Alibaba on Amsterdam! This place is a health hazard!! I tend to get my UWS Shwarma a few blocks down at Sido.
