  1. thank you thank you thank you! Been fiending for some good moules but haven't been able to find any that look decent anywhere. These dozen that I just got are beautiful and are soon to be even more so steaming in the midst of a mariniere sauce. Cheers,

      Where is Currant located?

Is marinara sauce the easier way to steam them? Do you have to add anything besides the mussels? covered or uncovered? Perhaps some white wine added?
I guess I am looking for an easy way to prepare them for a quick fix with them with the least fuss. :)

Maybe I'm being a food elitist, but putting marinara sauce on mussels is like putting ketchup on a ribeye. I think the term you're looking for is meuniere. It's simply steaming them, covered, with salt, pepper, garlic and good white wine, maybe a fresh herb or two. Nothing too strong. A little good bread, more of that good white wine and you're there. Mind not to overcook the mussels. Take them of the heat as soon as they open.

Moules mariniere are mussels steamed in a white wine-fish fumet stock, with garlic and butter.

I found large NZ Greenlip Mussels at Lucky Seafood on Mira Mesa Blvd for $3.59. They were great, even though it was my first try at preparing them
Probably need some coaching for improved cleaning.

Further down the Blvd. at the Large Seafood Supermarket found frozen NZ Greenlip Mussels blanched, in a half shell and ready for a salad or a hot saucey liguid swim! $5.95 for a Kilo (2.2 lbs) box. Good for a quick fix or snack.

Both stores are large complete grocery supermarkets with many new foods to try and kitchen tools.
Have not investigated the Clairmont Mesa stores at this time.
