Sol y Sombra -- Scottsdale AZ
Because our friend Karen was visiting from Los Angeles, and because we still had part of the $231 check refunded to us by the escrow company after our new house closed (seemed like free money even though it was originally ours anyway), we decided to check out Sol y Sombra in north Scottsdale, a tapas restaurant recently reviewed in the Arizona Republic. My husband would not have been averse to viewing some of the Scottsdale cleavage mentioned in the review, but the early Sunday evening crowd was fairly sedate and nobody fell out of her dress. However, Karen and I enjoyed the charming and handsome young male servers.
Oh yeah, the food. Actually, it was quite good. Karen and I had mojitos and Jamie had a margarita, and we ordered the following: serrano ham with manchego cheese and figs rescuscitated in something alcoholic (can't remember what); the potato tortilla; frisee tossed with goat cheese and orange segments; the special of the night which was meatballs of mixed lamb, pork and beef; small chunks of air-dried Spanish chorizo; jumbo prawns, and calamari. (I may be omitting something.) If we had gone back and re-read the Seftel article we might have skipped the serrano ham plate which, at $16, was the most expensive item on the menu, and although there was nothing wrong with it we didn't think it was worth the extra price. Most items were around $8 or $9. Everything else was fine; the calamari was possibly the most tender I've ever had, and the really outstanding taste was the air-dried chorizo, although fairly pricy since there were only four small chunks. They have apparently increased the dessert selection because there were four or five choices; we ordered the cream cheese flan (fine, but not outstanding) and discs of very dense, very dark chocolate cake. The tab for all of this came to around $170.
Karen wants to go back the next time she visits. I'm not sure if the attraction is the food or the servers.
