    1. Crumbs - UES or UWS. I personally like the UWS better.

          buttercup on uws is horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible.

        2. Sugar Sweet Sunshine (LES...Rivington St)

          1. Financier Patisserie (Stone St.) has great cakes. Lots of varieties and very delicious.

            1. For cupcakes, try Out of the Kitchen on Hudson St. (I don't remember the exact address, but it's a short walk from the Christopher St. stop on the 1 train). A friend served them at her wedding in lieu of cake, and I've been hooked ever since.

              1. Sugar Sweet Sunshine on Rivington Street. Plus the prices are fair!

                1. Seconding Crumbs, for cupcakes or cake. Cupcakes are great.

                  1. The cakes at Cafe Lalo located in the UWS are great. I've gotten a few red velvet cakes that were delicious and very well received. And they often have same day service though it depends what cake you would like.

                    Cafe Lalo

                    1. We recently had a chocolate cake w/ vanilla cream icing from Billy's Bakery for an event and it was truly amazing. It got raves from everyone that tasted it.

                      1. Try Little Red Hen on 8th Avenue between 11th and 12th street in Brooklyn.

Little Red Hen is awesome and also has a location on the Upper East Side. Their Brooklyn Blackout cupcakes are delish...

(Two Little Red Hens is the real name - I'm a fiend...!)

The UES location is on 86th and 2nd. Also be sure to try their Brooklyn Cream cupcakes (yellow cake, chocolate fudge frosting, with the Brooklyn zip code 11215 written on top) and their summer fruit pie...

                        2. i agree with sugar sweet sunshine! that's my favorite place to get birthday cakes or cupcakes. the almond buttercream frosting is so good.

I second the girl at SS Sunshine. Great cupcakes and other stuff. I regularly order my wife's birthday, anniversary, etc. cakes here. One highlight: the pistachio cupcakes.

                          2. I'm curious, has anyone tried Mrs. Maxwell's on Atlantic Ave by Pennsylvania in Brooklyn? It was the bomb when I was growing up.

                            1. I add to the Two Little Red Hens rec's - they are BEAUTIFUL and TASTY!!

For beautiful, try the "regular" frosted cupcakes there - yellow or chocolate cake with either vanilla or chocolate buttercream frosting. They're decorated with gorgeous flowers on top. They have some great cakes with even more extravagant flower decorations (sometimes they have flower-decorated Brooklyn Blackout cakes, mentioned above). Or, you can have them custom-decorated (choose flower colors or just a different design entirely) with 48 hours'/ 2 business days' advance notice...

                              2. I second the rec for Out of the Kitchen. Their icing is better than Magnolia's (the cake isn't quite as good, but, really, we all know the icing is what it's all about.) They look plain, though, so you'd probably want to add some sprinkles or something. They always have a lot made up too, so you could probably get them pretty quickly.

                                1. Amy's has the best chocolate (devil's food)cupcakes I have ever had. Also cupcake cafe is also ok. Their cupcakes cakes are very nicely decorated too..
