Lunch at Ming Tai...Millbrae
5 Chowhounders had a very nice meal at the Millbrae location (other location on Noriega in S.F.)...they are known fo their plump, plentiful wonton and dumplings..and we had double orders of both (for just a nominal additional charge) After the incredible, overwhelmingly huge stuffed wontons and dumplings..whole shrimp, pork.. (woodears?) help please....the broth seemed a little underwhelming...no matter, we had a great version of salt and pepper diced fried tofu...crispy, custardy and surrounded by tiny fried fishlet crispies...altogether the most satisfying version of this dish as I've had (especially those 'crispies"!)
We were accidently 'comped" a dish of ja leung....crisp fried "Chinese donut" (savory) enrobed by rice noodle roll...the sauce came as two puddles...one of sesame paste, and one Hoisin sauce which we could mix to our own flavor desires...very nice, if unexpected addition...our "amuse bouche".
We continued with a nice version of House Special Crispy Noodles...which were covered invarious sea foods, and a gentle sauce.....
We tried their Foon Kin fried rice (very inexpensive at $7.95) but I have had much better versions, even at this price...
All together a very satisfying lunch...!
Two of us continued across the street to Shaws...unchanged for 3 decades at least, to celebrate National Ice Cream Day...I had a butterscotch sundae with coffee crunch ice cream...not the best, but it was THERE!
